anyone new to poker looking for help?

im pretty new to poker myself, and i have been thinking there are probably more people like me around here.

what i had in mind was maybe getting one of the guys around here that is really good at poker to give us some pointers. Patrick Mcirish maybe?

anyone else interested in learning poker, or learning to improve their game?

good point areeff. however the more advanced players may not find as much help with something like this, as maybe others like me who are still pretty new to poker.

RPM. I won the rx poker tournament in vegas. That by itself doesn't mean I am good. I have also been playing poker as my main source of income for the last 2 years. I am now mostly playing 15/30 on empire/party.

If anyone wants some help/pointers I like helping out new players even at low limits.

Good idea RPM, and yes I agree with Tekari he is a better player than I am. I have played very little in the last 5 years (mostly once a week) and even then the stakes were pretty high, plus I am sure he has more time than I do. Anyway as Areef says we all should be trying to learn, once you quit learning you will always fall behind eventually. I don't care how smart you are/were. Poker as a skill is something you can always fall back on to earn.

My only request Tekari is that you share here as much as possible. I don't care if you work a little something on the side but post here whatever you can about the game so we all can learn. Don't want to take too much off the board if we can help it. Thanks.

Tekari, are you comfortable with the potential collusion issue playing at the 15/30 level? Care to share your opinion.

I am a regular NL Hold Em player (not online any more though). I played online at UB and PokerStars and I am sorry but the software is flat out rigged to create action, rake, and bad beats.

I play tournament style (like the WSOP) no limit hold 'em 2-3 times a week in live games.

Not really sure where to start as far as pointers go, but would love to field questions.

I feel fairly comfortable in the ring games at the 15/30 level. I usually play when the pot size is over 280, as long as it is not just due to alot of pre-flop raising.

In the shorthanded games I feel collusion becomes more of a concern at the 15/30 level but I haven't gotten into that.

Basically I have been winning in the good games at night at 15/30 and I feel that if there is any collusion it hasn't impacted my profit, and I will continue to play as long as I am winning

Wan't to learn poker but don't know where to start. Am a former part time blackjack player(around 300 hrs/year),been concentrating on sports lately. I know absolutely nothing about poker - any suggestions?

I, like tekari, have been playing poker as my only source of income for about 18 months.

I dont play on the same level as him, mostly because I am in college and dont have a wife, kids, etc... and because the games at the lower limits(mostly 3/6 - 10/20) are much easier during the day. But here is my advice:

FIRST THING ANYONE AND EVERYONE SHOULD DO IS BUY A POKER BOOK.

Dont learn the basics and buy in online or head to your local casino like I did. Start slow and small, and always with a book.

I would recommend "Winning Low-Limit Hold'em" by Lee Jones for beginers, and "Hold'em Poker For Advanced Players" by Sklansky/Malmuth for anyone else.

good advice by Derek. I am far from sharp at poker, but learning (slowly). Those two books are MUST MUST MUST reads. I'd add the following tips:

you HAVE to start playing games to learn, starting at very small limits. Don't read 5 books first and then jump in head first. Once you have a good idea of what is going on from reading, start wading into games slowly with money you're not afraid to lose. You will learn much more by playing as you read. Experience is everything in poker.

Don't play the "play money" games online. These are not a realistic model of what happens in real money games. You will probably hurt yourself more by practicing in these kinds of games. Also, avoid watching WSOP and similar shows. A lot of the strategy they use their is not obvious to beginners, and is also incorrect when you are not playing no-limit or head-to-head.

I haven't played a lot of poker online, but I would definitely suggest playing live games first. The games at sites like Party Poker go way too fast for beginners. Reading other players is a huge part of poker, and the speed at which bets are placed online doesn't allow a newbie to understand what is going on.

P.S. Maybe we want to set up a private table at party poker or somewhere else, low limit ($0.5/1 or 1/2) for these guys who are interested in learning. We could agree to play it slow and give out some pointers along the way. just an idea.

Well, anyone that is NEW to poker, I agree 100% with reading poker books, watching videos, or DVDs, etc.
Here in Florida, we have $1/$2 limits at the dogtracks and that's a SAFE place to start with playing at a live table.
I also agree with some other posters that online "play money" is NOT what it's like when you play with "real money". BE CAREFUL!!!
Chips ARE money!!! The reason why they give you chips, is so the value of the item being tossed into the pot IS NOT what it seems to the "Average Joe Poker". (As I like to call them.)
There's another thread in this room about certain books and videos to watch/read/etc. I would STRONGLY take some of these guys' advice. The poker community is large, but certain NAMES DO STAND OUT and are an invaluble lesson as to whom you learn from.
